How to choose insecticides and miticides

Correct identification comes first. Aphids, spider mites, thrips and caterpillars respond to different products, and one that works on a given pest may do little for another. Check the undersides of leaves and confirm what you have before treating.

      • Insecticidal soaps and horticultural or neem oils work on contact against soft-bodied pests such as aphids and mites, so thorough coverage matters.
      • Pyrethrin-based sprays provide quick knockdown on contact.
      • Biological products, such as Bt for caterpillars and Beauveria bassiana-based products, target specific pests and fit into an integrated pest management plan.
      • Systemic products are taken up by the plant and are not appropriate for every crop, so check the label first.

Use every product strictly per its label, including approved plants, timing and protective equipment. Some products here are pickup in store only. For disease problems see Fungicides, or browse Pest & Disease Control.
