How to choose plant food and fertilizer
Match the fertilizer to your plant, your growing medium and how much attention you want to give it. The three numbers on every label, N-P-K, show nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Nitrogen-leaning formulas support leafy growth, while blends higher in phosphorus and potassium are typically used as plants move into flowering and fruiting.
- Slow- and controlled-release granules, such as Osmocote, feed for months and suit set-and-forget container and bed feeding.
- Water-soluble powders and liquids give you more control and a quicker response, and are common in soilless and hydroponic growing.
- Supplements such as calcium, bloom boosters and wetting agents fill specific gaps; they are not a replacement for a complete base fertilizer.
